THE GREAT PLAIN OR HORTOBÁGY IN HUNGARIAN

THE FAMOUS EQUESTRIAN HEARTLAND
If you’re into horses then I’ll take you to the equestrian heartland of Hungary, the Great Plain – or more precisely to Hortobágy.
I recently met an American family who spent a whole month in Europe. When they got back home they messaged me to say that the highlight of their trip was the Great Plain!! I think that says more than anything else!
How can I guarantee 100% that we will have an unforgettable day? Why will the memories of these people, the landscapes and the herds of horses linger for years to come? Well, because I have loads of friends there, so you’ll get insights no one else would experience. I’ll take you to places you can’t even imagine. You’ll see and touch all the animals, and you can get to know the real people from the Great Plain. It’ll truly be an authentic expericence you’ll never forget.
ONE HORSEMAN ON FIVE HORSES

If you’re also crazy about horses, then you may have seen photos of a man in blue driving five horses while standing on the backs of two of them. Pretty amazing, right?
The idea came to an Austrian equestrian painter in a dream.
A Hungarian horseman from this area (called csikós) saw the painting and brought it to life. It’s pretty difficult to stop a 1,300 pound horse from galloping. Yet this guy controls 5 of them. This show is spectacular and dangerous. You’ll be sitting on the edge of your seat!
Imitators from other regions now do the same thing but always in an enclosed area, whereas on the Great Plain there is no such thing as a fence. And the horses are smart – they know there are no barriers to hold them back. And they love their freedom. It’s a truly thrilling experience.
As mentioned in the video, I was born and raised in Budapest, but it is in the Great Plain that I finally learned how to ride a horse properly from the greatest masters. For me, there’s nothing like the thrill of galloping like crazy on horseback. It’s so fun and exhilarating.

TO THE HEART OF THE GREAT PLAIN, HORTOBÁGY
During our 2 hour-trip to the Great Plain I’ll tell you everything you need to know about this region, from the role it played during 40 years of Communism to why all traditional meals, such as goulash, originate here. We’ll pass by picturesque landscapes, too.
Our trip will start by sitting in a horse-drawn carriage that’ll take us right to the middle of the Plain. There, you can really get a taste of what it’s like to live in this region – the temperature, the soil, the wide-open spaces and the amazing views. You’ll be transported in time and forget all about city life.
OUR SPECIAL NATIVE ANIMALS
We’ll go from one herd of animals to another. We’ll see the grey cattle that only we Hungarians have.
If you have ever been to Nuremberg, Germany, you must’ve seen a sculpture of this muscular animal at the main square, just near Starbucks by the way. Guess why? Because in the Middle Ages these animals were herded to the international markets there. These magnificent animals were so tough that they never lost any weight on their way to Germany.
LUNCH EITHER AT A RESTAURANT OOOR AT MY FRIEND’S PLACE

By the time we return from the 1.5 hour-long trip to the middle of the Plain, it’ll be time for us to have a delicious Hungarian meal. We can either eat at a nice restaurant ooooor I can ask my great friend to prepare some grey cattle stew. The whole experience will be as authentic as can be.
I wish I could tell you all the surprises waiting for you on this trip, but then, they wouldn’t be surprises any more, would they?

HORSE RIDING
If you fancy riding a horse, your wish can come true in a spectacular landscape.
My friends have been working with people from all over the world for 35 years, so don’t worry, you’ll be in good hands.
And nooo, they don’t speak any language other than Hungarian, but words like trot, gallop, etc., they know in 20 languages.
You can trust them to look after you like family.

DISCOVER AN ERA GONE BY
We can also pop into museums to discover the trades and skills that were commonplace when life revolved around horses.
Or we can go and see a friend of mine to give you an idea of what houses look like and how they raise animals today. Or we can go and see the zoo with all the typical Hungarian breeds and walk up to the viewpoint where you can admire the eternal Great Plain.
In short, if you want to experience life in the countryside without feeling like a tourist, then this Great Plain-Hortobágy trip can’t be missed. I guarantee you’ll always remember this day!
